P versus NP

If the answer to a problem can be checked quickly, can it also be found quickly? Formally: is P, the class of problems solvable in polynomial time, equal to NP, the class of problems whose solutions can be verified in polynomial time?

In plain words

Sudoku, scheduling, many design problems and the security of much of modern cryptography all sit inside NP. If P = NP, all of them would have fast algorithms. Most researchers expect P ≠ NP, but nobody has been able to prove it.

What's known

  • Thousands of problems are NP-complete (Cook 1971, Levin 1973, Karp 1972): a fast algorithm for any one of them would give fast algorithms for all of NP.
  • Three known barriers rule out whole families of proof techniques: relativization (Baker, Gill and Solovay, 1975), natural proofs (Razborov and Rudich, 1994) and algebrization (Aaronson and Wigderson, 2008). A correct proof has to get past all three.
  • For explicit problems on general Boolean circuits, the best known lower bounds are only linear in the input size, about 3.1n (Li and Yang, 2022).

Good places to start

  • Check a claimed proof against the three barriers. Most claimed proofs fail one of them, and showing which is useful, kind work.
  • Work through a reduction by hand, such as 3-SAT to graph 3-colouring, and post it for others to check.
  • Explore small cases: compute the minimum circuit size of small Boolean functions, where exhaustive search is still possible.
